Virginia's plug-in solar law takes effect

Virginia's plug-in solar law went live on July 1, 2026. Signed by Gov. Abigail Spanberger in the spring, it lets homeowners and renters set up small portable solar systems and start trimming their utility bills — no rooftop project required.
The law creates a category for small portable solar generation devices and, notably, amends the Residential Landlord and Tenant Act so tenants have clearer footing to use them.
Key details
- Systems up to 1,200W of output are covered.
- Signed by Gov. Spanberger; effective July 1, 2026.
- Includes landlord-tenant provisions relevant to renters.
One caveat
A few trackers still list a January 2027 date for certain provisions, so confirm the specifics with your utility and local building authority before you plug in.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. Plug-in solar rules vary by state, utility, and local code, and they change often. Always confirm current requirements with your utility and local authority before installing.
