Colorado signs the most generous law yet

Colorado plug-in solar

Colorado signed the most generous plug-in solar law in the country in May 2026. HB26-1007, signed by Gov. Jared Polis, permits portable solar devices up to 1,920W — higher than any other state — and requires utilities to accept meter collars that make installation easier.

Why it stands out

  • Up to 1,920W of output — the highest cap in the U.S.
  • Bars landlords and HOAs from blocking installations.
  • Requires utilities to accept meter collars.

The timeline

The catch is timing: the law's provisions don't take effect until January 1, 2027. So while Colorado's framework is the strongest on paper, residents will need to wait for the start date before plugging in.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. Plug-in solar rules vary by state, utility, and local code, and they change often. Always confirm current requirements with your utility and local authority before installing.
